Online Interview Hints & Tips
During and since the aftermath of Covid-19, employers have been finding that interviews can be conducted via video conferencing and through the safe use of the internet whilst still enabling them to have that personal touch when trying to find the next business fit for them.
To ensure you carry out a successful online interview, we have put together a few tips that might help calm the nerves and make you feel fully prepared.
- Find out which online platform will be used during your interview. This will be made known to you at interview confirmation stage. Make sure you download the correct software if required
- Set up the software on the device you will be using, it is always best to use a laptop or PC to conduct interviews as this will give you a more stable host
- Familiarise yourself with the software, ensuring you know your way around the meeting. Set up a practice meeting with a family member or friend so you can see how everything works
- Ensure that you know how to use the correct functions and can turn your camera and microphone on and off without any trouble, to avoid any disruption during your interview
- Before the interview make sure your device is fully charged and your internet connection is strong and not dropping out
- Choose a spot with good lighting, where you won’t be interrupted and that is clear from any distractions to you or the interviewer
- Avoid setting up any virtual backgrounds, this can be a distraction or potentially cause issues, or obscure your true image. Make sure the space behind you (that the interviewer will be able to see) is tidy and professional
- Ensure you have prepared fully for the interview and that you know the role you are being interviewed for along with the duties and responsibilities. Please also make sure you have researched the business, what they do, the interviewers name and their job title
- Have a pre picked outfit ready that will make sure you are dressed professionally. No hoodies, dressing gowns or visible writing/labels showing
- During your interview make sure the software is set up to show the full screen, minimising any other potential distractions popping up onto your screen
- Whilst being interviewed be aware to ALWAYS make eye contact with your interviewer. Avoid looking at yourself in your camera as this will be picked up on
- Maintain positive body language, sit up right, don’t fidget. Don’t play with hair, touch your face or pull faces
- If needed have notes, (for example any end of interview questions you have written down) and ensure they are out of screen shot. Don’t rely on these or make it obvious when looking at them
- Ensure that the application has been completely shut down and you have left the meeting before making any non-interview related comments or noises
